More About This Sumatra Dark Roast Coffee Beans

Our Sumatra dark roast coffee beans are sourced from the highest-altitude, family-run farms within two special cooperatives, Ketiera and Koperasi Kopi Gayo Organic (KKGO). These farms are located in the Takengon highlands of northern Aceh, Sumatra, and are dedicated to improving both coffee quality and the well-being of their local communities.

What makes this Sumatra dark roast coffee unique is the careful refinement of the traditional Sumatran wet-hull method. Unlike the usual process where the parchment layer is removed when the beans have a 30-40% moisture content, these cooperatives wait until the moisture is closer to 20% before hulling. The beans are then sun-dried on raised screens or patios, resulting in a bold, full-bodied cup with a cleaner, slightly brighter profile compared to traditional wet-hulled Sumatra coffees. This method preserves the classic heavy body and low acidity while reducing excessive earthy tones.

These Sumatra dark roast coffee beans are produced by the Guyanese people, with many farms and cooperatives managed primarily by women. The history of the region is deeply tied to resilience and resistance, with the Free Aceh Movement fighting for autonomy until 2005. Today, the premium Fair Trade prices earned from this coffee support vital community projects, including health clinics and schools
